Ancient Origins: Pewter has been used since ancient times, with evidence of its use dating back over 2,000 years. It was commonly utilized by various civilizations, including the Egyptians, Romans, and Chinese, for creating a wide range of items, including  jewellery.

More historic facts

Renaissance and Baroque Periods: The use of pewter  jewellery continued to evolve and flourish during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Craftsmen created highly detailed pieces with ornate motifs, often incorporating semi-precious stones, enamel, and other decorative elements.

18th and 19th Centuries: Pewter  jewellery continued to be fashionable during the 18th and 19th centuries. These eras saw the emergence of styles like Rococo and Neoclassical, influencing pewter jewellery designs.

Decline and Revival: With the rise of more affordable and accessible materials, such as silver and gold-plated  jewellery, pewter jewellery went into decline during the 19th and early 20th centuries. However, there was a resurgence in the late 20th century as people began to appreciate pewter for its historical significance and unique aesthetic.

Contemporary Pewter  jewellery: Today, pewter  jewellery remains a popular choice for those who appreciate its rustic and antique charm. Contemporary pewter  jewellery designers and artisans create a wide range of pieces, from necklaces and bracelets to earrings and brooches. Pewter's affordability and its ability to take on intricate and detailed designs make it a unique and attractive choice for both traditional and modern jewellery.

Pewter is an alloy primarily composed of tin, with small amounts of other metals like copper, antimony, and bismuth added for strength and durability. It has a slightly dull, silvery-grey appearance and can be polished to a shiny or matte finish. Pewter jewellery is known for its vintage appeal, making it a favourite among collectors and those who appreciate historical and artisanal craftsmanship.

How should a bracelet fit a woman?

There should be at least half a cm gap between the bracelet and your wrist so that it moves a little but not so that it slides off completely. Some people may prefer their bracelet tighter, which is fine if they do so but having a bracelet too snug can be uncomfortable and could cause indentation marks on the skin. Again, this depends on the individual we do recommend a little bit of gap but personal preferences may differ.

What size bracelet for a woman?

The average size of a bracelet for a woman is usually 7 inches or 18 cm, however this depends on the wrist size of the person or individual as the average size is not applicable to everyone. Our copper bangles for example are bendable to fit all wrist sizes, our link bracelet and other styles of link bracelets can be removed with a tool so that you can adjust to your liking.

What is the average bangle size for a woman?

The average bangle size for a woman is between 7 inches to 7.5inches or 17cm to 18cm. Again, this depends on the person as some people have smaller wrists or larger wrists than average as well. The best way is to either measure the wrist or a well fitting bracelet which will give you an accurate result or get a bracelet that is easy to adjust -either with links, straps, bendable or adjustable chain

Is it better to have a loose or tight bracelet?

It is best to have a slightly loose but well-fitting bracelet. There should be at least half a cm gap between the bracelet and your wrist so that it moves a little but not so that it slides off completely. Some people may prefer their bracelet tighter, which is fine if they do so but having a bracelet too snug can be uncomfortable and could cause indentation marks on the skin. This does depend on personal preferences and can change depending on the individual.

How much bigger should a bracelet be than your wrist?

This depends on how loose or tight you prefer your bracelet to be, we suggest a ½ cm or 1 cm bigger than your actual wrist size. If your wrist size for example is 17cm then we suggest 17.5cm or 18cm for a decent fit that isn’t too tight.

What is the average bracelet size for a woman UK?

The average bangle size for a woman is between 7 inches to 7.5inches or 17cm to 18cm. Again, this depends on the person as some people have smaller wrists or larger wrists than average as well.

Benefits of Pewter

Pewter offers several benefits when used for  jewellery making, making it a popular choice among both artisans and consumers. Here are some of the advantages of pewter for  jewellery:

  • Affordability: Pewter is more affordable than precious metals like silver, gold, or platinum. This makes it an excellent option for people who want stylish and durable jewellery without breaking the bank.
  • Durability: Pewter is a relatively durable material. It doesn't tarnish as quickly as silver and is less likely to corrode or rust. This makes it a good choice for jewellery that can withstand daily wear and exposure to the elements.
  • Malleability: Pewter is a malleable material, which means it can be easily shaped and molded into intricate designs. jewellery artisans can create highly detailed and decorative pieces, making pewter jewellery versatile in terms of design possibilities.
  • Lightweight: Pewter is lightweight, making it comfortable to wear for extended periods. This is especially advantageous for larger or more elaborate jewellery pieces.
  • Vintage Aesthetic: Pewter has a slightly dull, silvery-gray appearance that gives it a vintage and antique charm. This makes it a popular choice for individuals who appreciate a rustic or historical look in their jewellery.
  • Hypoallergenic: Pewter is generally hypoallergenic, which means it is less likely to cause skin irritation or allergic reactions. This makes it a suitable choice for people with sensitive skin.
  • Low Maintenance: Pewter jewellery is relatively low maintenance. It doesn't require the frequent polishing and cleaning that some other metals, like silver, do. A periodic wipe with a soft cloth is usually sufficient to maintain its appearance.
  • Compatibility with Other Materials: Pewter pairs well with a variety of other materials, including gemstones, glass, and enamel. This allows artisans to create diverse and visually appealing  jewellery designs.
  • Historical and Artistic Value: The use of pewter in  jewellery has a rich history, and many people appreciate its historical and artistic significance. Collectors often value pewter jewellery for its craftsmanship and uniqueness.
  • Environmental Considerations: Pewter is an eco-friendly choice for jewellery as it can be recycled and repurposed, reducing its environmental impact.

While pewter has numerous advantages for jewellery making, it's important to note that pewter jewellery may not be as shiny as silver or gold and can have a more subdued appearance. Additionally, the exact composition of pewter may vary, so it's a good idea to verify the materials used if you have specific concerns about allergies or sensitivities.
