Magnetism was first discovered all the way back in 600 bc the healing powers of magnets were said to have enthused Cleopatra but it’s true understanding and potential was only realised in the twentieth century. The first form of magnetism was found in the form of a mineral magnetite called lodestone which contains iron oxide. The Greeks were the first to have discovered this when they realised the stones ability to attract other pieces of iron and magnetic metals. We at DEMI+CO have put together a short history, scientific studies that prove the benefits of magnetic therapy and some customer testimonials on the effectiveness of magnetic bracelets.

Timeline of the Magnet and its uses

  • The Englishman William Gilbert (1540-1603) was the first to investigate the occurrence of magnetism. He also discovered that the Earth itself is a weak magnet.
  • Quantitative studies of magnetic phenomena started in the eighteenth century by a Frenchman Charles Coulomb (1736-1806), who recognised the inverse square law of force, which states that the attractive force between two magnetized objects is directly proportional to the product of their individual fields
  • the Scotsman, James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879), who provided the academic foundation to the physics of electromagnetism in the nineteenth century by showing that electricity and magnetism represent different aspects of the same underlying force field.
  • The modern understanding of magnetic phenomena in condensed matter originates from the work of two Frenchmen: Pierre Curie (1859-1906), the husband and scientific collaborator of Madame Marie Curie (1867-1934), and Pierre Weiss (1865-1940).

How does Magnetism work and what are the benefits

One of the theories about how magnetism works with the body is that the fields surrounding the magnetic bracelets stimulate the field where the pain occurs. This is thought to trigger the release of the body's own painkillers, thereby providing natural relief for the person instead of having to take medications over long periods that may have bad side-effects.

It is also thought that because metals like iron, zinc and magnesium are essentially components already found in the human body. Magnetism is able to affect them in a way that brings about helpful change at the cellular level; in particularly by impacting on particles in the blood and increasing oxygenation so that circulation is improved, and a person heals quicker. After all, everyone knows what happens when you put a magnet beside a metal: it attracts it.

Is there any proof or studies showing that magnetism actually works?

  1. A study in the BMJ in 2004 trialled the effectiveness of magnetic bracelets in reducing pain of osteoarthritis of the hip and knee. The test was carried out with a placebo group and three parallel groups to see if the magnetic bracelets are effective in pain control. 194 men and women aged 45 to 80 years took part across five general practices. Researchers concluded that pain from osteoarthritis did decrease.
  2. Researchers at the University of Virginia, in the US tested to see if magnet therapy reduced the intensity of pain from fibromyalgia a rheumatoid disorder. They concluded that the intensity of pain did reduce for the patients, enough to be "clinically meaningful".
  3. Researchers at Harvard University asked patients with osteoarthritis to take part in a research study to see if magnetic "sleeves" worn on their knees would help them with their ailment. The patients wore the sleeves for six hours a day for six weeks. The researchers found that the beneficial effects kicked in after four hours, with a sevenfold difference between those who had the magnetic sleeve and those who had a sham device.
