Gold hoops earrings have been rooted in many cultures and have been a much sought-after accessory throughout the centuries. The oldest earrings discovered by archaeologists date back to 2500BC and belonged to Sumerian women who favoured the now timeless hoop earring style. During the 1920s gold hoops were brought back into the starlight after Howard Carter discovered King Tutankhamen’s tomb in 1922. The rebirth of gold hoops as popular accessories was greatly influenced by Spanish and Egyptian culture and the idea that they symbolised power and high social status became an idea readopted by 1920s America.
The short hairstyles and the classy updos of the 1920s and 1930s made earrings an essential finishing touch to any outfit. They were popular with flapper girls associated with the time and with shoulders now being exposed with low-cut blouses and hemlines shortening, a pair of stunning hoops matched perfectly with the less stuffy styles becoming popular in the 20s.
This new style found its way all over the USA and wearers included popular celebrities, American entertainer Josephine Baker loved wearing gold hoops on stage which stood out against her short, fun hairstyles.
Going into the 1960s, hoop earrings became a signature look of the decade. The sleek hair styles of the 60s complimented hoops perfectly.
