We have put together the facts, history and FAQ’s on our stainless steel and titanium bracelets, so that you can be up to speed!

The history of Titanium

Titanium was first discovered in 1791 in Cornwall, England by Reverend William Gregor. However, he discovered the titanium mineral in a black sand called menachanite, which he then analysed and found that it was composed of iron oxides and an unknown metal.

Fast forward to 1795, Hungary, where German Scientist Martin Heinrich Klaproth investigated a red ore named Schörl. Klaproth realised that it also was an oxide of a previously unknown metal which he then named Titanium.

Interestingly, Titanium was named as such after the Greek Titans, who were immortal, omnipotent beings, birthed from the Earth Goddess Gaia. Once Klaproth was made aware of Gregor’s discovery, he was able to investigate menachanite and confirm that it too contained titanium.

However, it wasn’t until 1910 that a worker for General Electric USA, M. A. Hunter created pure titanium, by heating titanium tetrachloride and sodium metal. Titanium jewellery, on the other hand, wasn’t sold until the early 1990’s, as it became increasingly popular due to its robust nature, hypoallergenic properties and lightweight feel.

The history of Stainless Steel

Although it may not seem so, stainless steel is a relatively new invention – it was first produced only 100 years ago. In the decades that followed, it had revolutionized the modern world, and has been useful in the construction, healthcare and jewellery industries.

True stainless steel was first invented in 1913 by Harry Brearley, by adding chromium to iron and thus producing a metal that was resistant to both corrosion and rust. Brearley invented this metal whilst he looked for a solution to the problem of erosion in the gun barrels of the British Army.

After stainless steel was first developed, improvements were made with haste, as people rushed to put it to work in a range of applications. In Sheffield, England, factories began manufacturing surgical tools and cutlery from the metal, and by 1925 stainless steel tanks tested their resistance to corrosion by storing nitric acid for industrial appliances.

In today’s world, stainless steel remains an ideal and useful material. It is 100% recyclable and can be reprocessed without degradation, keeping it out of the waste stream, thus making it a highly eco-friendly material. Its resistance to corrosion means that is has a long service life, when cared for correctly. Together, these qualities make stainless steel the perfect material to use in our stainless steel magnetic bracelets.

No there are no side effects to wearing a magnetic bracelet, as long as there is no allergy to the metal used  then most people can wear magnetic bracelets without any side effects or problems. We don’t recommend people who have a pacemaker, insulin pump, or another internal or wearable medical device to wear a magnetic bracelet – those people should avoid.
